Looking for a drug-free, effective way to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, PMS, arthritis or headaches? “Acupuncture has a 3,000-year-old tradition of helping heal those conditions,” says New Yorkbased holistic physician Frank Lipman, M.D., author of Spent: End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again. What’s more, “acupuncture can also be a quick fix for jet lag, tennis elbow, erratic sleep schedules, aching backs and flu symptoms.” During an acupuncture treatment, tiny sterilized needles are placed on various points along the body. “From a Western perspective,” explains Dr. Lipman, “acupuncture is about getting a message into the nervous system that triggers a release of numerous chemicals, such as endorphins, which can relax you and help balance hormones. What acupuncture does,” Dr. Lipman continues, “is free up the peripheral nerves, and when you do that, not only does the pain fade but function improves.” The 60-minute acupuncture and moxibustion treatment is one of the most often-requested treatments at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto’s Riraku Spa (www.kyoto. regency.hyatt.com). After a 15-minute patient consultation, the practitioner inserts needles in acupuncture points. As Riraku Spa’s assistant manager Kiyo Kawada explains, “The practitioner heats up these areas with a paper-wrapped stick of dried mugwort herb (what the Chinese call moxa). While the incense slowly burns, it warms and relaxes the body while releasing a soothing aroma.—Kyle Roderick
